Benzodiazepines

Introduction

BENZODIAZEPINES (BZD) are minor tranquillisers widely used in clinical practice for sedation and relief of anxiety. They are also widely used for illicit or non-prescribed purposes.

Benzodiazepines are CNS depressants. They have antianxiety, anticonvulsant, hypnotic and muscle relaxant properties. Their use can result in performance deficits (including memory impairment, motor incoordination, decreased reaction time and ataxia).

For more information about Benzodiazepines, refer to the chapter from the Handbook for Health Professionals, Chapter 11 'Benzodiazepines'. (Handbook, Ch11, pp.147-156) (PDF 104 KB). Also see the Resource Kit, Benzodiazepines.
