Specific populations

Indigenous

There is a range of special considerations in relation to the AOD use of Indigenous Australians. Patterns and correlates of use are often quite different and health care needs more complex than for the wider community.

Women

Until recently, women generally consumed fewer drugs and at lower levels than men. This pattern is changing, with increasing proportions of young females consuming alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. This is especially the case among the 14-19 year old age group.

Youth

Youth (up to 18 years) and young adults (19-25 years) are particularly important groups in relation to AOD problems. More young people are engaging in problematic AOD use at younger ages. They are especially vulnerable to AOD-related problems due to age and inexperience.

Health professionals

Health professionals are not immune to problems with drugs or alcohol. Apart from the general risk factors they share with the rest of the community, health professionals may be exposed to particular risks.

CALD

Australia is ethnically a highly diverse country. A person's cultural background i.e. country of birth, language spoken at home, religion and ethnic background may have an impact on drug use and/or associated problems and their resolution.
